| Winners will receive a cash prize and appear on the Lighten the Load Gospel CD. The CD will also include important messages about Iron Overload. This dangerous condition affects many people with Sickle Cell Disease who receive 10 or more blood transfusions (20 transfused units) in their lifetime. While the transfusions are helpful, the new blood introduces extra iron that the body can't get rid of by itself. Iron Overload, if left untreated, can damage the heart, liver, and other organs—even if the person with Sickle Cell Disease has no symptoms. The good news is that Iron Overload can be diagnosed and treated. The Lighten the Load Gospel CD and the Be Sickle Smart program are dedicated to getting this message out. |
